The history of the Daiquiri

The invention happened by lucky accident in 1896. It was created by Jennings Cox, an American engineer who managed Cuban properties for two American companies in the town of Daiquiri (credit as a co-creator is also often given to a Cuban engineer named Pagliuchi). With important guests on the way and besides gin, he found himself in a predicament. He was concerned about whether guests would find the local liquor palatable served with ice. Therefore, he added lime juice and sugar to the island's pure sugarcane rum, and thus a classic was born.

There is no spirit more suited to pirates than rum. Not because it is closely associated with seafaring, nor because it is part of pop culture, but because rum is completely resistant to rules. The different styles of rum vary depending on where the rums come from, how they are distilled, and how they are aged (if at all). The only thing that connects different types of rum is the basic ingredient: sugar cane.
