Fill up your glass with ice cubes. Put the freshly squeezed lime juice in and almost fill it up with ginger beer (save room for the rum). Grab a barspoon and place its head on top of the cocktail. Pour the rum over the barspoon so the rum settles as a layer at the top of the cocktail. This creates the nice contrast in the cocktail. Garnish the drink with a lime wedge, and it's ready to serve.
The history of Dark and Stormy
The cocktail originates from Bermuda, but it is not credited to a single individual, but it's rather a product of the officers of the British Royal navy that was given dark rum and ginger beer. It's unclear why, but a theory states that it had something to do with gingers effect on sea sickness.
There is no spirit more suited to pirates than rum. Not because it is closely associated with seafaring, nor because it is part of pop culture, but because rum is completely resistant to rules. The different styles of rum vary depending on where the rums come from, how they are distilled, and how they are aged (if at all). The only thing that connects different types of rum is the basic ingredient: sugar cane.
